Installing Canon MF3240 on Windows 7 64 bit (x64)

You probably inserted the CD that came with this printer and got a dialog box during the driver installation that complained about 64-bit incompatibility. Thanks, Canon, for providing the 64 bit drivers on the CD! (/sarcasm)

Anyway -- here's how you install the scanner and printer drivers for this device on Windows 7 64-bit machines --

  1. Detach the printer from the computer.
  2. Visit the follow link (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=335&modelid=12943)
  3. Find the "Select OS" dropdown and select "Windows 7 (x64)" from the list.
  4. Click the red download link (MF3200_MFDrivers_Win_x64_us_EN_7.exe).
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the next page and click "I agree -- begin download".
  6. Save the executable to an easy to remember location on your computer. Browse to the folder in Explorer and run it. It will extract the drivers to a subdirectory in the same directory as the executable called "MF3200_MFDrivers_Win_x64_us_EN_7". Remember the location of this folder for later.
  7. Attach the printer to the computer.
  8. Ignore or cancel out of any automatic prompts that Windows tries to open. It will not be able to find the right drivers on Windows Update or elsewhere.
  9. Click the Start menu button and search for "Device Manager". Open it.
  10. Under both the "Imaging devices" and "Other Devices" tree menu subitems, you will see CanonMF3200 devices (there should be a CanonMF3200 entry in both tree menu subitems). They should have question marks or exclimation marks next to them, meaning they are not functioning or are not installed.
  11. Right click on both of these devices and select "Update Driver Software". Click
Browse my computer from driver software" and browse to the driver folder ( that you extracted to earlier (called "MF3200_MFDrivers_Win_x64_us_EN_7"). Again, you will need to do this two times -- for both devices (scanner / fax and printer).
  12. You should be done.

Let me know if you need clarification or this does not work.

Hi,
Thanks for the instructions, but it didn't work for me ! :(

Did you get any sort of error?

J.Tharsen said...

Hi Andrew,

MF3240 on Win7(x64):
I can print fine, but the scanner is still not working.
The devmgr says it's installed correctly (I did make sure to use the new x64 drivers) but when I try to scan (using win fax&scan or adobe) it goes about halfway across and hangs, and unplugging the USB is the only way to reset it. Using the MF Toolbox I get the error: "The scanner you selected cannot be found. Please check the scanner status and the cable connection." There is no error indicated on the scanner.

Many thanks,
J.

That's weird -- sounds like a fluke. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer / scanner (from Devices and Printers). Reinstall with a fresh copy of the drivers (maybe the download got corrupt). Nothing is immediately coming to mind.

Oh, and your best bet is def Windows Fax / Scan -- that is all that seems to work for me.

Hi,

Thanks for your help

Hey guys, I'm out of town and can't really do any more testing on this until 6/20/2010 or 6/21/2010.

What I'll do is run through the steps again and see what I missed in the tutorial. I kind of made the guide from memory after actually setting this up; probably missed something!

Hold on :)

And no problemo.

What about if its a network printer?

Trying to install network printer (printer is connected to computer1 XP via USB). My computer2 is trying to print via computer1 but computer2 is Win7 64-bit and does not like the canon driver supplied at their website.

Hi Andrew.
After downloading the driver from Cannon, selecting device manager, browse my computer, and then selecting the driver,I then get an message when trying to update driver. It says:windows could not find the driver of your choice.
Please help me.
2). Also, on the link for Cannon, whenever I try to unzip their file and try to install the driver, it tells me that their is an older version of my Mfdriver which I can not locate on my hardrive. Please advice.

Hi Andrew!
I did work for me... but only can print, my scanner is not working. I tried your suggestions to J.T but didn't work.

But the important thing is that now I have printer; this option was dead for me when I change to windows 7 64bit

Thank you!!!

I have mine set up with the AXIS 1650 print server, about to try your suggestion but through the print server. I had major trouble setting up 32 bit Vista to print via the AXIS 1650, but finally found a way to make that work.

Today I was able to trick Win 7 64 bit into setting up the print server IP adddress,in spite of the fact that Canon told me the AXIS 1650 would never work with 64 bit Win 7, but I have a hard time believing that. I hope I can do it with directly connecting the printer.

Edit: I got both working finally. My problem was I downloaded the wrong Win 7 driver (use the down arrow to find the Win 7 (X64) driver!!!) The Axis 1650 print server still works!! But you must install the USB printer as a USB virtual printer, while attached directly to the Win 7 PC first! Then add the network printer as a TCP/IP printer using the same drivers!!!!

Thanks, Andrew. Much appreciated. TS

Kinda worked? I can print, occasionally. I made sure to remove the previous drivers (the same ones from Canon) before reinstalling them.. got printing functionality back, but it will only print certain items and inconsistently. Win7x64 system with the mf3240 printer. IMO problem is Canon has a driver post date of 10/23/2009 to make it look like they're win7 compatible, but the device hardware states that the driver assembly date was march of 2007.

Any ideas or am I just hosed into a new MF printer?

I get a message telling me I've successfully installed the driver for my Canon Imageclass MF3240, having selected Windows 7 64 bit. Why don't I see the printer in my control panel? It's connected via USB to the computer. I'm missing something.

Hi Andrew,

Thank you very much for posting this helpful solution. You are much smarter than Canon's "expert." I really appreciate your practical instruction. It works perfectly for me.

Happy New Year.

It didn't work for me for the first time. But when I unattached the printer and COMPLETELY(delete the drive from Device and Printer is not going to delete it) deleted the printer drive, and restart the pc. It works by auto-detected by system. But first of all. U need to download the 64bit drive from the canon site and extra it.
If it does not auto-detected by the system u may need to manual install the drive following the instruction by Andrew. And one more thing, I don't know if that matters but it works cuz I also changed the USB port from the cases' to the on board ports after I restart the pc. So good luck all.

I do not currently see a 64 bit driver on the list for the cannon mf3240?

Jason K. said...

By default, when I would go to Canons website it would not show me any 64 bit driver options. In fact, the reviews there were multiple people complaining about no 64 bit driver.

For some reason you had this link and it took me to the same device but there was 64 bit driver!

Downloaded, updated the driver through the device manager for both printer and fax.

Then I installed the 32 bit drivers for sharing

All flawless.

Couldnt have done it without ya!

thanks

Awesome! I feel like I'm back in Windows 95 doing driver updates a VERY old-fashioned way. Shame on Canon for creating a terrible "install" program, but THANK YOU to Andrew for reminding me that sometimes we have to go back to what we were doing 15 years ago.

Thanks for posting this info. I just spent hours trying to figure this out. I finally googled "Installing Cannon MF3240 on windows 64 bit. The first thing I found was a fourm where some a supposed Microsoft expert basically told the person they were out of luck and they should have done better research before buying this printer. I'm going to go back to that site and refer the person to your blog. Again Thanks!
A.L. Breaux

I followed your suggestion to visit the link, however, when Windows 7 OS is selected, there is no 64 bit driver as you show in line 4. My printer does not work with the 32 bit version that is there. Maybe Canon removed the 64 bit version because of all the problems reported with it. Even Canon help told me that they had a 64 bit version but when I told them what I found, they then responded that they did not have a 64 bit version. So, I gave them a bad review and have not heard from them. Not holding my breath.

Anonymous said...

yes it did work!! thank you!!

I originally downloaded win 7 32-bit because I didn't notice 64 bit on the drop down list.

Unknown said...

First off, thank you Andrew. Quite ridiculous that this doesn't support 64-bit OS out-of-the box! I think I know some of the problems people are having. The link for the driver you have posted still shows only the 32-bit version. I did a web search and found the 64-bit version on the CANADAian Canon website! Here is the link: http://canoncanada.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16910/~/imageclass-mf3200-series-printer-driver-ver.3.00-for-windows-xp/vista/windows-7

In my case, all CanonMF3200 related icons were shown under the "Other" icon when bringing up Device Manager. As you said, I needed to update the driver for both the scanner (which had a '!' mark on it) and for the CanonMF3200 icon (which didn't). Once I updated the latter, it was moved to the "Printers" area of the devices. That is, it didn't show up in the Device Manager anymore, but under the START->Devices and Printers area.

Hope you all followed that.

Again, thanks for your time and generosity Andrew!

Unknown said...

READ FIRST!!! Sorry, ignore that last comment about going to the Canada Canon site. Although it will work, it is not necessary. As a previous blogger wrote, you can find the WIndows 7 (x64) in the Select OS menu of the U.S. Canon website if you scroll down.

Sorry for the confusion.

Anonymous said...

thanks Andrew, i follow all your steps to install my canon, the printer work perfectly, at the beginning my scanner does not work, but then I click on start, then search for scanner, click on windows fax and scan and a new page opened and it had the cannon fax and scanner 3240 on it , now my scanner and fax work perfectly. the scanner or fax icon still dosn't show up in the "control panel-devices and printers', but i dont care, the important thing is that everything works perfectly , to get fast access to the scanner I just pin the program to my taskbar.
I hope this information can help somebody,
I was trying to add this printer to my new pc for almost 1 year,
Thank you so much!!!! people like you make this world better and better every day!!!!!

Canon "recommended" a firmware update for my imageCLASS MF3240. I downloaded and ran the firmware update. I followed their instructions to the letter. It killed my machine! I have power just fine. The printer always worked perfectly -- even the day I updated the firmware (before the update!). Now all the lights comne on and none go off. The printer does not resume the normal stand-by status. THe LED screen is completely empty. Zip! Nadda! I have unpluggede every possible combination, and I have powered-down, and powered-up every possible combination. Canon tech support calls it a "coincidence." They had no idea what to do. There has to be some way to recover from a bad firmware fail. Now my computer won't even recognize that the printer is connected. It's all because of the firmware update. What's the fix? I need my printer! Now that Canon killed my printer with their firmware they want me to buy a new one!

Everyone.. If you've followed Andrews instructions & still are not able to scan, it may be because you have not downloaded the canon "MF Toolbox" which gives you a desktop shortcut with the scanning software and a huge scan button that you click to start your scan. To obtain the "MF Toolbox", you can use the same canon link Andrew provided but this time download the "software" (after you've download the driver of course). I hope this helps some of you!

like Scott Shanahan, i couldn't get the link on canon to download the right version even though it specified win 7 x64. i had to use a unofficial link. this is where i got mine: http://www.downloadatoz.com/howto/canon-imageclass-mf3240-windows-7-driver-download,21162.html

no guarantee of viruses but so far so good for me. after downloading and updating the driver, it actually failed once b/c it said the printer drivers were unavailable. i went with it and rebooted the computer. upon restarting, windows update spent some time updating from the web and it fixed all the issues itself. funny.

I used these instructions early on to get the MFC working and all was well but the scanner never read, so used windows fax/scanner instead. That was fine, until a few days ago. No the scanner dumps partway through a scan. Any ideas?

Re-Installing at the level of the device manager just leads to the dm telling me all is fine, no update needed. I do not have an "other devices" list on the DV list, only the "Imaging Devices" option -Have gone through all and no other canon devices through the whole menu. Hence went to windows fax/scanner instead. But now that is not working. Hmmm....

It worked!!! Thanks!

SUCCESS!!!! PRINTER WORKED BUT SCANNER DIDN'T! FIGURED IT OUT!!!

FYI, IT APPEARS FROM ALL THE COMMENTS THAT MOST OF YOU WERE ABLE TO EVENTUALLY GET BOTH PRINTING AND SCANNING TO WORK USING ANDREW S'S ADVICE. FOR ME I COULD PRINT, BUT NOT SCAN. MID-SCAN IT WOULD FREEZE AND LOCK-UP, WHEREBY I HAD TO UNPLUG THE USB CABLE FOR IT TO UN-FREEZE.

ANYWAY, I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS A USB 2.0 VS A USB 3.0 PORT THING, OR IF ONE OF MY USB PORTS HAS A PARTIALLY BAD CONNECTER AND THE OTHER DOESN'T, OR IF MY DRIVER IS SPECIFYING A SPECIFIC USB PORT, OR WHAT... ALL I KNOW IS ONE OF MY USB PORTS SUPPORTS BOTH PRINTING & SCANNING, AND THE OTHER ONE ONLY SUPPORTS PRINTING (WITH LOCKUP SCANNING).

POINT IS, IF ALL ELSE FAILS, TRY CONNECTING YOUR CABLE TO A DIFFERENT USB PORT AND SEE IF THAT WORKS FOR YOU TOO!!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Andrew, what a relief! I purchased this for my office via garage sale. I was assured by the owner that it was in good condition and would work with Windows 7.
Needless to say, I had all the issues that everyone else has experienced. I have worked on it for over a week, downloading from the canon site.
What finally clicked for me was when i saw your highlight for remember the location of the folder...the download never showed me what file it was downloading too! I finally clicked on a little blurb I was getting from Nortons saying the file was safe. Wow, can you guess how many times I had downloaded the same file? well...it was a lot!
I appreciate your computer skills or what your called "nerdiness" and most of all your compassion to help out us "grannies" that expect it all to work automatically!!!!
You are a peach Andrew - you have significantly made a small charity work efficiently!
(Now what can you do with a smashed glass on my cellphone???)
:)

This is not easy I got the printer to print but there is no software download for toolbox for 7 64, I am going to try to download the 7 32 and see what happens and then update with the 64 drivers. Canon is bullshit with this. Just because the printer is a bit old it's one of the best I have had, almost no problems in years since I have been using it.

Everything works in mine
Thanks a lot. You are the best. For 24 hours, I tried to install canon mf3240 in window 7 64bit and failed until i came across your blog. That was a blessing.REGARDING THE SCANNER, you need to go to canon 3200 series icon in printers section in the control panel. Right click the canon mf3200 series icon and then left click the start scan and the scanner document page will open. Click the scan on the page and it will scan. Now, you can scan anything you put on the scan/copy flatbed of the printer and it will appear on the document page and can be saved.
